Over 500 riders descended on Horseshoe Valley for Superfly Racing’s Perennial classic Canada Cup at Horseshoe. As part of Mountain Bike week in Oro-Medonte, this is the first in back-to-back races at Horseshoe and Hardwood Ski and Bike. While only 10 km apart, they are worlds apart in terms of the terrain and course.
A totally re-vamped 1:45pm Elite course saw the revival of our original course at Horseshoe, with the grueling “Alpe-D’Atkins” added after a 3 – year hiatus. This climb, and subsequent fast, flowy Bench cut trail are a true test of riders’ mettle. The newly revamped 8:30am course brought to you by Caterpillar/Durham Shredders gave the kids starts a fantastic taste of the venue, while the Sport/Expert course was similar to previous years. As always, Horseshoe’s amenities and on-site accommodations really set it apart from other venues in the series.
The weekend was topped off by incredible performances from homegrown talent – the Canada Cup overalls are enjoyed by solely Ontarians living within 100 km of each other! Haley Smith of Norco Factory team took an early lead and walked away with the win in Elite Women, while Peter Disera of Norco Factory team, who resides 1km from the start area, was able to hang onto his third Horseshoe title in as many years, just outsprinting National Champion Derek Zandstra of 3Rox/Cannondale. The much – hyped “3-Pete” for Peter Disera puts this young phenom in a class we haven’t seen in Ontario in a long time. Another sprint finish saw Andrew L’Esperance of Forward Racing-Norco just outsprint the other brother Disera, young Quinton Disera of Norco Factory Team. Taking second and Third respectively in Elite Women, were Cindy Montambault of Equipe de Quebec: Trek, and Soren Meeuwisse of Trek Canada. The Junior Expert categories saw wins by Centurion/Next Wave’s Gunnar Holmgren, and Roxanne Vermette of Equipe de Quebec.
Big thanks go to CRCS/3Rox, title sponsor of the Canada Cup, Scott Bicycles, title sponsor of the Ontario Cup series, our presenting sponsors Bateman’s Bicycle Shop, Cloud9 a/v, Norco, and of course, Horseshoe Resort. Another big thanks to Oro-Medonte/Township of Barrie for their support of this double weekend of racing in the Barrie area!
