The UCI World Cycling Tour, now the UCI Gran Fondo World Series, is entering its eighth season with new events and growing participation. Amateur and masters’ cyclist who are ambitious to compete for the coveted rainbow jersey now get the chance in qualifier events all over the world to win their ticket for the World Championships in Varese Italy, from August 30th to September 7th 2018.

The Blue Mountains Gran Fondo, on June 14th (TT) and 16th (RR), is currently the only Canadian stop for the UGFWS qualifier events. The Blue Mountains near Toronto, Canada will offer a great experience and challenging courses, both for the time trial and the road race. The organizer Bruce Bird is the current UWCT Road Race World Champion in the 45-49 age group.

The Road Race event consists of 16 separate categories of riders competing in 8 distinct races. The riders are classified into categories as determined by age according to UCI rules (see World Championship Qualification Criteria). All of the riders will be required to carry UCI licenses or race day road permits (available at registration), in adherence with the UCI’s aim to contribute to the international promotion of “Cycling for All” events by applying high criteria in respect both of the organization and the sporting and tourist interest. The purpose of the UCI Gran Fondo World Series brand is to enable amateur cyclists to battle for a World Champion title at events with the finest organization in the world.

There will be two distances that the riders will complete based on category. Groupings have been set up based on expected number of participants for each of the age groups along with projected speeds for the groups. More modifications to the groupings may be required based on attendance with the following guiding principles;

  • Groups of less than 80 riders may be combined with another group
  • Due to the yellow line rule and with safety in mind, no group shall exceed 300 riders
  • If an age grouping exceeds 300 riders, that group may be divided alphabetically by last name; the top 25% of each divided group will qualify for the World Championships
  • Groupings may be moved from the afternoon wave to the morning wave depending on registration
  • Final adjustments will be announced 24hrs after online registration closed on the event website and through an email communication to all registered participants
  • Combined groups will be differentiated by the UGFWS colour coding for of the numbers
