Well the 2012 season is right around the corner and that means that memberships are bound to pick up in the next few months.

There are a few changes in 2012 that all members should be aware of so please be sure to read below:

UCI’s Licence

Plastic Cards- This year all UCI licences will be printed on plastic cards. They will have the same look as previous UCI licences but will not require the hassle of having to find a place to laminate the card.

Photos- As always, photos are required on ALL UCI licences. This year with the switch to plastic cards, photos will be printed at the time of issue. What this mean’s is that all photos will need to be submitted digitally. Photos must also be in a 4:3 ratio (200 pixelsx150 pixels preferred). Photos larger than this will be resized to meet the 4:3 ratio. For a specific description of photo quality and requirements please see the document below.

PHOTO REQUIREMENTS FOR 2012

On-line Application- After a 4 year hiatus, on-line membership registration is back to help facilitate the photo upload and membership application process. You will now be able to apply for your licence, agree to the waiver and declaration, pay and upload your photo all in one process.

UCI Licence registration is on-line now. Just click on the membership registration tab at the top of the Ontario Cycling Association homepage.

Citizen Permits

The Citizen Permit cards have gone through a revamp this year. They will look similar to the UCI licence however with some slight differences.

The Citizen Permit Application will be up towards the end of February. On-line registration for Citizen Permits will be up towards the beginning of March.

Photos will not be required for 2012 Citizen Permits

General Memberships/Can-Bike Instructor Memberships

All General Members and/or Can-Bike Instructor Members can apply for their membership using the appropriate form in the Membership Forms and Literature section of the website. This form should be up in late February.

Photos are not required for these memberships.

A reminder that should you have any questions regarding membership to contact the OCA office and a staff member will be happy to help you out.

Arrival Day by Annie Foreman-Mackey

It was an early morning for the group of cyclists who gathered at Toronto’s Pearson Airport to catch their Sunday flight to California. Introductions were made and friends were reunited. Many travelers noted having a sleepless night in anticipation of this trip! Excluding the brief moment of worry when the flight downgraded to a smaller plane and left the possibility of Cayley and Mitch taking a later flight, the group stayed together and the trip was rather uneventful.

Upon arrival in LA, we met up with the rest of the athletes and were lucky to have all bikes and baggage arriving intact. From the airport we jumped into two vans headed to Oxnard. “Jumped” may be a bit of an exaggeration – all fifteen of us at the airport played a tricky game of Tetris in an attempt to fit all bike bags and all luggage into one cube van! After much deliberation and teamwork, the vans were packed and we were on our way.

The drive from LA to Oxnard was beautiful; there were mountains on one side of us and the ocean on the other. Many of us were scoping out the roads climbing up the mountains for later rides.

We are staying in two houses. The “Beach House”, home to the girls and younger guys for the week, opens directly onto the beach. We’ve been watching surfers ride the awesome waves from our living room window! “Pete’s House” is a two-minute walk away and is home to the older guys for the week.

Once arrived, each house had a frenzy of bike building and some took an easy spin around the city streets. A huge amount of groceries were bought at a local “Ralphs” and the workers took pity on us and loaned us a big, blue, metal cart to transport our boxes of food to the car.

By the time we finally made it to dinner and had our first team meeting, everyone was pretty exhausted and it was an early night all around. After a good sleep, everyone is bright eyed, bushy tailed, and ready for our FIRST RIDE IN CALIFORNIA!

Lessons learned on Day 1:

· Update your phone number on facebook

· The main goal of this camp is NOT perfecting our surfing skills

Day 1 by Marc-Antoine Nadon

Team Ontario athletes woke up to what was going to be an amazing first ride in the sunshine state. As the boys in the “beach house“ we were ecstatic with the view of the beach that we had from our basement window. The atmosphere was electrifying; we were all anticipating a great day at the office.

The ride was in motion starting from 10am on the beach house parking lot. As we assembled we all realised that we were definitely some Canadian winter birds as we were literally all Casper white. The ride was lead with our guide… the one and only Peter Glassford.

The route chosen was perfect to wake up the legs that were still “heavy“ from the flight. The team was then split into 3 groups of about 6. The super mega group (first group), which consisted of most of the U23 men. The second group the “Amazing 4“ (which I was part of accompanied by Mitch, Ben my super bffl/roommate and Kevin). And the super group which was the four gals, a few dudes and coaches Mike and Greg. The ride took us on a very scenic route around Lake Casites, for a total of 105 km of awesome roads.

After refueling we all had the same thought on our minds… SURF!!!! Wet suits were getting put on as we were all getting ready for the cold Pacific Ocean. We ended up chasing waves for one hour… Out of the 10 or so guys in the water Kevin Masicottie was the only one able to ride the wave!!

Over all we had an amazing first day on the bike and looking forward to the next days.

P.S Stay tuned for the highlight picture of the day! And the first camp video that will be posted tomorrow night!!

Over 130 women took part in the 2012 Womens Weekend (Feb 4th and 5th, 2012) presented by Joyride 150 Bikepark and the OCA. The weekend targeted women from Ontario who wanted to ride in a fun and relaxed environment.

And fun is what was had by all. The weekend started with some fantastic coach introductions and also a tour of the facility by resident Womens Head Coach, Shannon Bentley. The camp had a number of stations for the ladies to hone in some skills and learn some new techniques, even a station to work on changing a flat tire.. courtesy of Jeff Faulds at Norco bikes.

After a tough morning session the women enjoyed a nice tasty lunch followed by some treats supplied by PowerBar and Clif Bar. PowerBar was in attendance and was fueling the ladies all weekend long. After lunch the camp went into high gear as the speed and fun increased..one of the campers was quoted as saying “I am having so much fun but I am going a bit fast, I am getting dizzy!” – Unknown

After a big Saturday night many of the ladies were a little slow to get moving on Sunday; but after a good warm up and some instructor demonstrations, it was time to improve on what had been taught on Day 1.

Day 2 was a huge success as was the whole weekend. This camp wouldn’t have been possible without the support from the CCA, OCA and especially the Joyride 150 crew for hosting this awesome event.

Many thanks to the sponsors who supported the 2012 Joyride 150 Women’s Weekend. Please visit www.joyride150.com for the full list of sponsors.

Bring on the 2013 edition!! See everyone next year. Please see below for a few pictures.

Lori and Peter Kofman are pleased to announce the creation of a new Ontario- based Masters’ cycling racing team and club. The team has been established to utilize racing as a catalyst for raising funds for cancer research.

“We started eRace Cancer cycling team in response to my fathers’ death from cancer last year” says Peter. “It quickly hatched into an initiative that attracted like-minded racers, cyclists and sponsors. We are all interested in using our resources and racing energies to help raise money and awareness for this cause.”

The team consists of road, mountain and cyclo-cross racers who will race throughout the season at local, provincial, national and international events. The team includes and is represented by supporters, survivors and athletes, all of whom took up the charge because in one way or another cancer has touched them.

eRace Cancer has an impressive slate of founding sponsors that are supporting the team and have to date, donated over $40,000.00 in support of the Princess Margaret Hospital. In addition to corporate donations, the key fund raising concept of the team will be that every team member will raise funds from their individual sponsors for races completed and podiums received.

The team currently consists of 25 members with a goal to raise $100,000.00 by year’s end. The team plans to collectively race in over 100 races in the 2012 season. In addition to the founding funding partners, the team has attracted notable associate service providers who are stepping up to support the team in its mission throughout the racing season.

The Coaches Association of Ontario is proud to recognize the men and women who coach in Ontario. For five years, the Ontario Coaching Excellence Award Program has been celebrating the dedication and commitment of exemplary individuals who inspire, innovate and share knowledge of sport with others.

The Awards recognize the importance of leadership, performance and the value of human insight which are all integral to great coaching.

The Awards will be presented at a special ceremony during Ontario Coaches Week in Toronto on Saturday April 14, 2012.

We invite you to nominate deserving individuals with outstanding season achievements; those who have advanced their sport; those who inspire youth every day at practices, and those who are who are blazing a new trail. Nominations will be accepted up to February 10, 2012 in the following categories….

Excellence Awards

Grass Roots Coach

Good to Great Coach

Special Awards

Trailblazer Coach

Everyone Matters Coach

Andy Higgin’s Lifetime Achievement Coach

Excellence Award Categories (One Male, One Female in each)

Grassroots Coach - Two award recipients will be selected in this category; a dedicated male coach and a dedicated female coach who primarily coach youth or children. Coaches recognized in this category are inspirational role models in the community garnering the confidence and glowing praise from parents and local program leaders. The coaching focus would be on introducing children and youth to a sport, on instruction and developing fundamental movement skills while creating a positive environment for healthy development and instilling a life-long love to be physically active and stay involved in sport. A coach in this category would measure their daily success in the number of smiles achieved.

Past Grassroots Award Recipients:

2011 – Brian Gallant, London – Golf; Savoy Howe, Toronto – Boxing

2010 – Ron Angus, Burlington – Judo; Diane Huneault, Halton – Field Hockey

Good To Great Coach - Two award recipients will be selected in this category; an outstanding male coach and an outstanding female coach who have coached athletes that have achieved a high standard of performance in competitive sport. The coaching focus is on performance excellence and competing to win. The coach would be recognized as the primary coach who identifies talented individuals; who creates a training environment that further develops athletic skills and abilities to a higher level of success in competition over a period of time. An example of a coach in this category would likely have athletes they coached be selected on a national team to represent Canada.

Past Good To Great Award Recipients:

None – 2012 is First Year for Award

School Sport Coach - (SELECTED BY OFSSA) The selection of recipients (1 Male and 1 Female teacher-coach) is based on their unique contribution to sport through continuous development. The award does not reflect the accomplishments of a teacher-coach in any one year; rather the award is designed to recognize the contributions they have made over a period of years. The nominated coach must have influenced the development of new coaches and have shown evidence of program building as well as encouraging athletes to give back to sport. Furthermore the nominated coaches’ coaching style has proven to be ethical, demonstrated sportsmanship and contributed to the “education through school sport philosophy”.

Past School Sport Coach Award Recipients:

2011- Jackie Trudeau, London; Marc Sauve, Alexandria

2010 – Kathy Garvey; Lorne Smith, North Toronto

Special Award Categories (One winner per category)

Trailblazer Award - Up to one outstanding individual in the Province will be selected in this category. The Trailblazer coach is an innovative out-of- the-box thinker, a creative change agent who inspires others to follow, has made a difference in their sport or for the athletes they coach. Whether coaching a community rep team or top performing provincial athletes, the coach who pushes the envelope, invents new approaches to old challenges and breaks through barriers should be nominated for this award. Taking the road less travelled is often bumpy and this coach embraced the goal, persevered and made things better for their sport for years to come.

“Everyone Matters” Coach Award - The “Everyone Matters” Award recipient has influenced the culture of their team, their organization or community by embracing diversity and differences. Over a sustained period of time they have demonstrated the value of an inclusive approach through acceptance and accessibility. Examples in this category include success in reaching out to and actively welcoming different genders, different age groups, newcomers to a sport program or a coach who successfully integrates athletes with a disability into the program. One award will be given to a coach who leads with vision, resolve and courage to challenge the status quo.

Andy Higgins Lifetime Achievement Award - One award recipient in Ontario may be selected in this category; an outstanding coach who has made a significant contribution to coaching in Ontario over a very long sustained period of time; 20+ years. Andy Higgins, an Olympic decathlon coach, an educator and all around good human being, has devoted his lifetime to instilling positive values, citizen development and making a difference in people’s lives through sport. A coach who dreams big, looks for the possibilities, and focuses on a lasting legacy would be an ideal award recipient in this category.

Nomination Process:

The Nominator should complete the specific Nomination Form for each award and attach the appropriate supporting letters.

All nominations are due by Friday February 10, 2012 at 4:00pm.

A multi-sport selection committee will be convened by the CAO to evaluate the nominations in the case of the Grassroots, Good To Great and all three Special Awards. OFSAA has already selected the male and female School Sport Coaches for 2012.

In addition, the Board of Directors may from time to time make special recognition of individuals or organizations that have made a significant impact on coaches, coaching development or sport as they wish.

Dear OCA Clubs and Coaches,

Over the next few months the CAO (Coaches Association of Ontario) is excited to be launching a new pilot program under Quest for Gold called Experts Express. We believe this program can compliment the work the OCA is doing to develop its coaches further across the Province. Through the Q4G funds, Club coaches who are not yet working with carded athletes will be able to gain on-site, in club access to provincially endorsed Experts. Our hope is that this will provide them a mentor to help apply the classroom learning from NCCP. As such the areas of expertise we have chosen for the pilot – are aligned with NCCP Competition – Introduction workshops.

Club coaches will be able to apply for one of the following areas of expertise which is designed to build on the modules presented in NCCP workshops: Enhancing Mental Skills – Sport Psychology, Nutrition, Leadership & Management, and Coaching Athletes with a Disability. The Expert’s session fees and travel costs will be covered by the Coaches Association of Ontario with support from the Quest for Gold Lottery – Enhanced Coaching program.

For this pilot program (the first 3 months of 2012), there is a limit of up to fifty (50) Club Coach – Expert match ups. Each successful coach will be assigned one expert session (1-2 days) based on geographic areas and area of expertise requested by the Club’s head coach. For more information on this program you can visit http://www.coachesontario.ca/q4g/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=67&Itemid=94 to download the Application and Application Guide.

Before an application can be approved, the coach must have their application signed by the OCA The purpose of this form is to ensure the club is in good standing and the coach has your support and endorsement.

For more information please contact Brendan at the OCA. Brendan can be reached at racing@ontariocycling.org
