A mix of rain, sleet, snow and strong winds marked a weird day of weather at the first DH O-Cup of the 2013 season. Over 180 downhill riders braved the conditions to compete in one of cycling’s most extreme disciplines.

The race was held at the Horseshoe Valley Resort located in Barrie, Ontario, only an hour north of Toronto. The series organizer, Tuf Rack, definitely out did themselves by designing a fast and challenging course for these downhill racers to tackle. Jon Anderson, Adrian Pennachetti and all of the Tuf Rack crew worked day and night starting in early Spring to clear out the existing snow from the mountain to carve out an awesome track that was very well received by riders and spectators.

Race winner for the Elite men was Kyle Sangers (J&J CYCLE) hailing from Kingston, Ontario recording a time of 56.673. Rounding out the top 3 were Sidney Slotergraaf (TUF RACK RACING) and Michael Hermanovsky (Independent), respectively.

Taking the top spot for the new Expert Female category was previous 2012 winner Kristen Courtney (AdrenalineRacer/ ToWheels) with a time of 1:06.003. Finishing 2nd was Jennifer Valentine (EASTSIDE CYCLE RACING) and 3rd place went to Jennifer LeBlanc (SILENT SPORTS).

Overall, it was a great day of racing despite the nasty conditions and kudos to all riders, spectators and family members who beared the cold to come out to support this awesome sport.

Be sure to come out and watch these riders at the next DH O-Cup located at Camp Fortune in Quebec located 20 minutes North West of Ottawa.

Collaborate on 6- and 9-hour Relay Events

The HBCC and Mountainview Racing Development have collaborated to organize the “Georgian Bay MTB Challenge Series”. Each club will host a relay event at their home course with the goal of having an event that is fun and challenging for all levels of riders, in an atmosphere that is relaxed and festive.

Both events will include a free tee-shirt for all participants that pre-register, medals for top finishers and awards for overall series finishers. Categories include solo, tag team, 4-person for both events, and specific to the 9-hour event, a 5 – 10 person team.

HBCC event organizer Scott Holmes says, “HBCC has organized cyclocross and mountain bike events in the past and we felt it was time to utilize the facilities at Highlands Nordic in a longer event. This, in coordination with Thomas Wood’s (of Mountainview Racing Development) 9-hour race, we think is ideal.” Thomas Wood has been running his 9-hour relay event for a number of years inMidland. Thomas Wood states, “By adding in the HBCC Six Shooter event we will be making available two of the finest mountain bike trail systems on private property not readily accessible to weekend warriors, and combining them into a series serves to solidify the vision for a fun day on the bikes that both events share.”

Ken Smith, former Executive Director for Cycling passed away in his sleep on Tuesday April 30th at Longfields Manor in Barrhaven, where he had been a resident or the past three years. As the first Executive Director for Cycling at Sport Canada, Ken started the Canadian Cyclist, which became a national publication after Ken moved on to become Director for Non-resident Sports, which he pursued until his retirement.

Ken accompanied the national team to the Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh in 1970 and in retirement volunteered with the Commonwealth Games Committee and was involved with the development of the Commonwealth Games cycling track in Victoria and subsequent events.

Ken was a veteran of the second world war, having joined the RAF in 1940 where he served at North Weald during the Battle of Britain and susequently at Coltishall in Norfolk. Posted to Algiers in 1943, he served at allied HQ North Africa before moving on to Cairo en route to his final posting in Calcutta, India. In the latter posting, Ken served with the military police during a very tense period of civil unrest prior to the end of colonial rule.

Ken reached the local spotlight in Ottawa in the early 70s as a result of his 50 km commute to work at 333 River Road, riding a fixed wheel, long before ‘fixies’ ever hit the market. Ken’s last big ride was at the age of 80, when he rode the Summer’s End Century from Ottawa to Brockville. Much to his chagrin, at the age of 90, he had to spend his last three years were spent in a wheelchair. Ken leaves behind his daughter Cheryl, a grandson an granddaughter.

One of the longest standing events on the Ontario calendar, the race covers a 12.4 km loop through rural Pelham, ON and ascends the infamous “Saylor’s hill” on Effingham St. each lap.

This year we have a new venue for the start/finish, with a new finish line location that while not atop the steepest part of Effingham is still an uphill finish and should provide for exciting and tactical racing.
