Arriving late in the calendar this year, the classic season opener was left holding the number #2 spot in the O-Cup series. That didn’t stop the event from being #1 in quality and enjoyment for the 470+ riders who made the trek out to the Ancaster Fairgrounds last Friday.
Characterized by a mild temperature and overcast skies, the day couldn’t get any better for a spring road race in Ontario. 180 starters took to the road in the first three races of the day, including one of the larger women’s fields in recent history. A small crisis occured when, due to what only could be described as a solid lack of coffee, did the E4 pace car get led the wrong way, thusly diverting the entire field the wrong way.
As the day got hotter, so did the excitement. On this characteristically flat course, attack after attack was launched in the Elite fields in a effort to cull the pelotons. The E12 men even managed to launch an 8 rider break that built over 4 mins on the group, to only narrowly not get caught at the end.
Overall, a rousing success. The new location is certainly proving to be an outstanding course and the Hamilton Cycling CLub should be commended for thier efforts
