This past weekend the OCA ran a two day training camp for U17 and U19 athletes who are going to Nationals, the Tour De Abitibi and/or Le Tour de la Releve International de Rimouski. We had a total of 34 athletes from across the province attend the camp.
We also had a fantastic crew of coaches from the surrounding area all chipping in to help out. The group included; Jeff Schiller, Alex Sanna, Mike Amaral, Malcolm Eade, Rob Good, Anne Guzman, Mandy Dryer, Nick Allaire and Jeff Cockerton.
The goal of the camp was to help prepare these athletes for the upcoming events and help them work on and improve skills such as riding in a caravan, sprint lead outs, cornering, team time trial, wheel changes while racing, feeding and more.
We also had Anne Guzman from Peaks Coaching and nutritionsolutionsanneguzman.com give a very informative talk on nutrition that was specific to eating while racing.
The camp started on Friday with the Kitchener Twilight Criterium, the race was fantastic and while there were a few crashes all the athletes performed exceptionally well and everyone was ready to ride the next day. The weekend was filled with hard riding, skills and drills. Sunday started off with a challenge; the Canadian Sports Institute was on hand and tested all the athletes.
They were performing an all-out 3 minute maximum aerobic test, the goal of this testing was to introduce some of the newer athletes to testing, while also giving those who have power meters accurate numbers to train by.
We wrapped up the weekend with a final TTT showdown! On the women’s side it was the Junior women taking the top spot just ahead of the Cadet women. The cadet boys came within seconds of beating the Junior Boys for the title and team Newmarket were a very close third! Overall it was a very successful weekend! Team Ontario has never looked stronger or been filled with such a big talent pool!
