The Ontario Para cycling team participated in the Defi Sportif this last weekend in Montreal.
The Defi is held on the F1 circuit in Montreal with a Time Trial on Saturday followed by the Road Race on Sunday. The Time trial is used every year as selection to the National team pool and our guys were raring to go after some great winter training camps.
Mother nature was not on our side this year as it was one of the windiest Defi TT’s I’ve ever seen. This did not deter our team as Alex Hyndman and Joey Desjardins battled with the national (and paralympic medallist) Charles Moreau coming in 2nd and 3rd within 20sec of him and 6 of each other. Anthony Lue hammered in 5th with Roger Koert in 8th. The tandem team of Kevin Frost and Scott Laliberte battled to a 3rd place amongst the men.
Sunday’s Road race was a chilly 5 degrees and cloudy. Right from the gun a group of 4 went off containing both Alex and Joey, as well as an American and Canadian Champion Charles Moreau, quickly distancing the field. Anthony hung on for a lap with them but then had to drop off with the relentless pace being set. Roger and 5 others absorbed Anthony which became the chase group. The final lap saw Joey unleash a powerful sprint after leading the last 1/2 lap holding off Charles and Alex for the win, his first ever. The chase group saw another furious sprint with Anthony and Roger coming in 5th and 6th. Amazing results all round. The final race was for the tandems with the Quebec team attacking from the gun to eventually lap the field. Kevin and Scott sprinted in for 4th place on the day.
I am extremely proud of all our Athletes, new and old from our province (Elsa,Holly,Fernando,Kevin and Rich). Keep it up guys!
