After the cancellation of Ontario Cup #1 at Mansfield, we are happy to finally get the 2018 Ontario Cup season underway! Woodnewton is an excellent early season venue – and the addition of a killer new pump track for the 9am race, and some great new singletrack made for the best course of the last 8 years!
In addition to picture perfect weather, the racing itself was fast and furious. A huge changing of the guard saw another local win the Elite category, with Malcolm Barton of Durham Shredders outsprinting the legend Peter Glassford of Trek Store CC for the win! Past Elite winners of Woodnewton include local Commonwealth medalist Haley Smith! It’s no secret, have hundreds of km’s of trails nearby, and talent will emerge (note: Horseshoe Valley!) Third place in Elite went to another Uxbridgian – Tyler “Icicle” Orschel also of Durham Shredders.
Elite women saw U23 National Champ Jenn Jackson of AWI racing cruise to victory, ahead of Heather Gray, who herself had an impressive lead on third place Soren Meeuwisse of Trek Store CC. Junior Expert Men was won by Dylan Kerr of AJ’s Evolution p/b Norco, while Kaitlyn Shikaze of Oakville Cyclepath cruised to victory with a 14-minute gap in Junior Expert Women.
With the cancellation of Mansfield, a make-up event will see back-to-back races at Albion Hills, July 28/29. Enduro format Saturday, standard, shortened version Sunday – both for full points! Should be a great weekend of racing, camping and sitting around the bonfire at this great venue close to the GTA!
