A perfect weekend of weather, and Haliburton hospitality greeted a light crowd of riders for Ontario Cup #4 at Sir Sam’s Ski and Ride. Many international races, and a popular time for family vacation brought a smaller number of riders, but it was more than made up for with the enthusiasm of the crowd. 100 riders showed up for Sir Sam’s yearly banquet, and it was great to see another city of trailers and tents dot the Ski Hill’s landscape.
The normally 9am Sunday Youth Race was enjoyed at the top of the hill on Saturday, with a good crowd of youngsters and onlookers. The Men’s Elite race Sunday saw another newer group of riders in the top spot, with third going to Junior rider Dylan Kerr of Angry Johnny’s/Evolution. Also riding up from Junior, in the second spot was Tyler Clark of Homestead Racing, who also had the fastest lap by 2 seconds, taking the $100 Scott fastest lap cheque. Taking his first win in Elite, was Tyler “Icicle” Orschel, son on the legend himself, the Iceman. A strong field of women showed up to race, with third going to Dana Gilligan of Angry Johnny’s/Evolution. Soren Meeuwisse of Trek Canada took second, while there was no surprise with National Champion Jenn Jackson of AWI taking the win.
In the Junior Expert races, Marlee Vanderlee of Energy Cycling won the women’s race, while Colton Woods of Trek Store CC cruised to an easy victory.
The next stop on the Ontario Cup series is the back-to-back Ontario Cup weekend at Albion Hills, July 28/29. A long course Saturday, with a standard format Sunday will be a great departure from the normal, with prizes for overall 2-day champions as well as individual days.
Hope to see you out at Albion!
