Organized clubs are the foundation of grass roots cycling in the province. Cycling is a social sport and most riders find that involvement in a club is a natural outgrowth of their enthusiasm. Clubs provide for a good source of information and expertise to help novices become competent cyclists. As well, riding in a group adds to the fun and challenge of the sport.
Ontario has over 160 organized cycling clubs, ranging from a small, loosely-knit group of friends, to organizations of several hundred members. Clubs organize a variety of programs and events, such as regular training rides, recreational tours, educational clinics on racing, touring, traffic skills and/or mountain biking as well as social get-together.
While some clubs focus on either racing or touring, some offer a variety of programs for cyclists of similar interests and fitness levels. A beginning racer should seek a club with an active coach, preferably one who is fully certified through the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP). Effective racing clubs will offer a good development program with structured learning clinics and instructional supervised group rides.
Riders interested in touring should inquire about the average speed and distance of typical club rides, the location of the start and finish points, whether there are rest/snack stops, whether the group will stop if a rider punctures, and what other types of activities and programs the club is involved in.
