About Cycling Clubs in Ontario
Organized cycling clubs are the foundation of grass roots cycling in the province. Cycling is a social sport and most riders find that involvement in a club is a natural outgrowth of their enthusiasm. Clubs provide an excellent source of information and expertise to help novices become competent cyclists. Also, riding in a group adds to the fun and challenge of the sport.
Ontario has over 140 organized cycling clubs. A cycling club is simply a group of people who want to enjoy and promote cycling together. They range from small, loosely knit groups of friends, to organizations with over a thousand members. Clubs organize a variety of programs and events, and, depending on the nature of the club, may include regular training rides, OCA races, recreational tours, educational clinics, touring, traffic skills and/or mountain biking as well as social get-togethers.
While some clubs focus on either racing or touring, some offer a variety of programs for cyclists of similar interests and fitness levels. A beginner racer should seek a club with a development program with structured learning clinics and instructional supervised group rides.
Riders interested in touring should inquire about the average speed and distance of typical club rides, the location of the start and finish points, whether there are rest/snack stops, whether the group will stop if a rider punctures, and what other types of activities and programs the club is involved in.
