All aspects of cycle sport are subject to a variety of rules and regulations. These originate from the world governing body, The UCI (Union Cycliste International) with some technical or policy changes made by the Canadian Cycling Association and the Ontario Cycling Association to suit particular or specific circumstances.
In cycling, the officials designated to enforce the technical and sporting rules are known as commissaires and are assigned to events to ensure races are held in accordance with the rules, to ensure fair play and ensure the accuracy of the race results.
There are separate qualification courses for road and track commissaires and mountain bike commissaires, with each sector governed separately through a College of Commissaires, with a chief commissaire overseeing each sector.
The colleges of commissaires are responsible for the instruction of new officials, their certification, ongoing development and upgrading in the province. There are currently seven levels of commissaires ranging from technical assistants to international UCI certified officials. All commissaires become certified after the successful completion of a two day course, and the purchase of an OCA commissaires licence.
Course for training commissaires are held periodically throughout the year. If you are interested in a course in your area, one will be organized for a minimum of six participants.
