Trail Rangers Program This year marks the 15th year that this program has been up and running. The program was established for volunteer trail rangers who would be on duty for a one week period over the summer months. The rangers are offered free camping and access to the AlgonquinPark as a perk for participating. The program has always been a success with more applicants than we can place in a season.
The program runs during the summer months when the trail is most heavily used. However the best riding and scenery is usually found in the fall up until the Thanksgiving weekend. When not riding the participants are encouraged to explore the other activities the park has to offer.
The trail that we ride on is called the Minnesing Mountain Bike Trail and it is located in AlgonquinPark adjacent to the Cannisbay campground at km 23. There are 4 loops that vary in length from 4.7 km to 24 km, and vary in ride times from 1 - 4 hrs (dry weather).
The trail follows a series of cross country ski trails through the scenic back country and around several lakes ending up on an old stage coach road back to the parking lot. Riders will usually see fresh signs of moose, if not the real thing!
The trail is not as technically challenging as it is remote and this is where most riders run into problems. Medical emergencies are not as common as breakdowns, flats, or riders who have bonked. We find that these problems occur regardless of the riders bike handling abilities because they do not prepare properly for the remote nature of this trail. Ride prepared and carry water, food, tools, spares, and a first aid kit.
For those of you who are interested in the program please contact the OCA office by April 30 of each year. Applicants must be current members of the OCA and might be asked to participate in a training day in the Spring.
